Top-level domains (TLDs)

Posted in 7/7/08

A generic top-level domain (gTLD) is one of the categories of top-level domains (TLDs) maintained by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) for use on the Internet.

Overall, IANA currently distinguishes the following groups of top-level domains:

  • infrastructure top-level domains (.arpa)
  • country-code top-level domains (ccTLD)
  • sponsored top-level domains (sTLD)
  • generic top-level domains (gTLD)
  • generic-restricted top-level domains

The core group of generic top-level domains consists of the .com, .info, .net, and .org domains. In addition, the domains .biz, .name, and .pro are also considered generic, however, these are designated as generic-restricted, and registrations within them are supposed to require proof of eligibility within the guidelines set for each.

Historically, the group of generic top-level domains included domains that were created in the early development of the domain name system, notably .edu, .gov, .int, .mil. However, these domains now have all been sponsored by appropriate agencies or organization and are now considered sponsored top-level domains, much a like the many newly created "themed" domain names (cf. sponsored top-level domains. This entire group of non-country-code top-level domains, domains that do not have a geographic or country designation, is still often referred to by the term generic.

The following is a list of currently existing Internet Top-level domains (TLDs)

While the following list should be correct, there is a more definitive list the IANA ( Internet Assigned Numbers Authority ) website.

Tips for Successful Pay-Per-Click Campaigns

Introduction

Pay per click (PPC) is by far one of the easiest and quickest methods of driving targeted, consistent traffic to your website. While this may seem like a daunting method of advertising for some, it's actually quite easy and can end up becoming that one marketing method that you can't live without.

What I'd like to do today is provide some tips and techniques that I personally use when creating and monitoring PPC ad's. Hopefully these tips will help you in your future marketing endeavors.

Experimenting With Different Search Engines

There are many PPC search engines, with some being better than others. The top two are Google and Yahoo, which was previously known as Overture. It's a good idea to start your PPC campaigns with a small budget, spreading it out over a few different search engines to experiment and see where your target market may be lurking.

Generally speaking, I've found Google Adwords is better for more technically orientated products or services, including software, hardware, web design etc. Yahoo, on the other hand, is better for general consumer products, including insurance, toys, music etc.

What I wrote in the previous paragraph is very general, and you should analyze your campaigns carefully to see where they are performing their best. We'll discuss this in detail a little later in the article.

Selecting the Right Keywords

The keyword selection process is probably the most important of all when it comes to creating your PPC ad's. You'll need to select keywords that are specific to your product or service offering, but you need to be careful not to select keywords that are extremely popular, as this may deplete your PPC funds sooner than expected.

The keyword selection process begins by asking yourself just one question:

"If I was searching for a product just like mine, which words or phrases would I search for?"

Using your answer(s) to this question as your base, you can then use a thesaurus and common sense to start building your keyword list with plurals, synonyms, similar words, etc.

To see which keywords your competitors are using, simply try searching for them. If you see a PPC ad along the side for your competitor, then note that keyword down and add it to your list.

Another way of coming up with great keywords is to use the overture search suggestion tool: http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

Type in a set of keywords and it will list similar keywords, including the number of times that keyword has been searched for on Overture (Yahoo) in the last month!

There's often a fine line between selecting keywords that are either too specific or keywords that are too general. Try to keep away from these, as they can often result in wasted PCP funds.

A typical example of this would be an ad that I created recently for our latest product, TrackPoint, which -- not coincidently -- is an internet marketing return on investment (ROI) tracking tool. Although the product is heavily geared towards internet marketing, using such a broad term would have made it virtually impossible to compete with the other advertisers.

The term "internet marketing" is searched for 825,674 times per month on Overture alone. Combined with the huge number of different advertisers that target this keyword, the top bid for "internet marketing" on Google AdWords is $13.84 per click! With an average of 240 clicks per day, a single day of advertising alone would cost $505!

Now, unless you have an extremely high conversion rate of visitors to sales, or you're selling a high priced item that usually has a high customer acquisition cost, I suggest targeting more specific keywords. Not only will this decrease your overall competition with other advertisers, but it will also increase the chances of turning your newly found web site visitors into customers.

Back to my earlier example, I chose to be specific with my keywords. One keyword was "ROI tracking", which is searched for 1,828 times per month on Overture and has a much cheaper top bid. This keyword is also more targeted to the product I was marketing, meaning that a large percentage of people clicking on my ad should turn into customers.

It's also helpful to note that taking the top bid is not always necessary, and anywhere in the top 5-10 can generate great leads. This really does come down to budget and analysis.

Attracting People to Your Ad

Now that we've selected our keywords, we need to get those searching to click on our ad, which in turn will result in them clicking through to our web site and potentially purchasing our product.

One of the simplest ways to get peoples attention is to use their search keywords in the title of your PPC ad. This has been proven to increase click-thru rates on ad's by over 50%.

Why? Simple. If the potential customer is searching for "ROI Tracking" and the title of a PCP ad begins with "ROI Tracking", then their attention will be grabbed instantly. He or she doesn't need to know much else, other than that the PPC ad is catered specifically for him or her.

One thing to keep in mind is that you can sometimes create a more relevant title by combining your different keywords into one PPC ad. For example, I could have easily used something like "ROI Tracking PHP Script" as the title of my ad, which effectively would have decreased my click-thru rate, but definitely caters my ad more to a specific audience. Once again, this comes down to analysis and adjustment.

Another important technique to attract attention to your ad is to differentiate yourself from your competitors. In our particular case, the majority of our competition offer hosted solutions, whereby they manage the software on their servers in return for monthly or per traffic fees.

Our product caters to a different audience, those that want more control over their software, as well as those not wanting to pay monthly fees. So, in this example, I would make the title of my ad "Pay no monthly or per traffic fees".

Next -- and this is where experimentation is extremely important -- we need to create a description for our PPC ad that will attract the potential customer and let them know that our product is exactly what they are searching for. To do this, I start my ad's description with "Track PPC, campaigns & search".

Finally, it's good practice to add a "Call to action" at the bottom of your ad. If you're not familiar with this term, its usually an instruction to tell the person to do something, such as "Click here to view a demo", "Download Now", etc.

Marketing experts seem to agree that the average human needs to be prompted to click on an ad or take action, so we'll add this line to the end of our PPC ad's description:

"Track PPC, campaigns & search. Try demo!"

Reducing Click-Thru's

Sometimes it's important to reduce the number of clicks your PPC ad is receiving. This could be because you are attracting people who are only after free products/services, or even the wrong target market.

The two quickest ways to reduce click-thru's are to make the description of your ad more targeted and to add the price of the product to the ad.

Making the description more targeted (as I've discussed above) can reduce your overall click-thru rate, but potentially increase the likelihood of a click resulting in a purchase.

In my earlier example, by adding the words "PHP script" to the description, we are effectively filtering out those looking for a hosted solution, downloadable software or even those with a server that isn't capable of running PHP scripts.

We also increase the targeting of our ad because we now know that the majority of those clicking on the ad are looking for a PHP script, which is exactly what our product is.

Secondly, by adding the price of the product you are selling to the end of the ad, you instantly eliminate those looking for free products, and target those willing to purchase your product or service.

Tracking Your Clicks and Conversions

The fundamental core of a successful advertising campaign -- whether it be a PPC ad, banner ad or even newspaper ad -- is knowing whether or not your ad's are actually converting into sales or not.

If your ads aren't making you money then you're more that likely better off saving your advertising dollars and adjusting your ad's or using your marketing budget elsewhere in your company.

Both Google and Overture have built in tracking and conversion tools that you can use to get a holistic view of your current PPC ad campaigns. You can even use external tools which let you add conversion code to your website to tell you exactly which of your ad's are converting into sales and which aren't. This is often referred to as knowing your ROI or Return on Investment.

We need to know exactly how much money we are making per dollar spent on every PPC ad. If the ROI is positive and we are making more money than we are spending, then the ad is working and we can use this knowledge to further improve our other ad's or increase ad spending for that particular ad/set of keywords.

If, however, our ad's are costing us more than they are returning, then we can reduce our spend, change our approach, or remove these ad's altogether. It's a rather simple formula, but frustratingly ignored by many advertisers.

You must track your ads if you want to succeed with any form of Internet advertising. You should also constantly monitor and adjust your ads according to how they are performing, your return on investment, etc.

Conclusion

Hopefully I've provided you with a clear insight into PPC advertising and techniques that you can use to improve your advertising campaigns. It pays -- pun intended -- to do your research and understand your target market, because the rewards can sometimes be much more than you expected.

How to get more back links

How To Get More Backlinks and Increase Website Traffic

Ezilon.com Articles - Backlinks are links that are directed to your website from other websites or blogs. Backlinks are vital to any website ranking in search engines.

Not only do they generate traffic themselves by giving web surfers an active link to click through to your site, but they also increase your PageRank. PageRank is Google's way of measuring the importance and relevancy of website.

The more inbound links pointing to your site, the higher your PageRank will be. And the higher
your PageRank, the more willing other websites will be to link to you.

As you can see, increasing the backlinks to your site can have a snowball effect on the number of visitors to your website.

Now let's take a look at a few ways you can increase your number of backlinks.

1. Many of your visitors will have their own websites and blogs. Ask them to link to you. You'd be surprised how well this works if you offer content that is really useful and informative.

2. Make it easy for others to link to you by creating a "Link to Us" page and give them the html code so all they have to do is cut and paste it onto their web pages. The easier you make it for them the more likely they'll be to link to you.

3. Submit some articles to article directories in exchange for a link back to your site.

4. Submit your url to various directories. Back in the early days of the internet, there were no search engines like Google or Yahoo. People found what they needed by searching a directory that was broken into categories.

Today, most people prefer to use the search engines to find what they need. But the directories haven't died out just yet. Some people still use them and the links still count for PageRank.

You can submit your website to quality directories like:
Yahoo.com
Botw.org
Uncoverthenet.com
Ezilon.com
Goguides.com
Skaffe.com
Gimpsy.com

For a comprehensive list of directories you can submit your website to, check out http://www.seocompany.ca/directory/top-web-directories.html

5. When you agree to link to a website in exchange for that website linking back to you, it's called a reciprocal link.

As with directories, many website owners have all but given up on reciprocal linking. They argue that the search engines have devalued reciprocal links to the point where they're not worth the time it takes to obtain them.

But there are others who still have great success with this method. The key is to not just link to anyone for the sake of linking. Link to sites that are truly useful and relevant to your visitors.

When done right, reciprocal linking will work for everyone and both websites will receive a boost in traffic.

SEO Strategy

Search Engine Ranking, demystified!

SEO is short for "search engine optimization." To have your site optimized for the search engines means to attempt to have top placement in the results pages whenever a specific keyword is typed into the query box. There are many search engine optimization services to choose from, so here are some things to keep in mind when seeking SEO services or developing an SEO strategy of your own.

Search engines have two types of listings: those that are paid for, which are usually distinguished as "sponsored links" and those that are organic.

To the right is a screen shot of a Google® search results page. The listings in red are paid ads, and the listings in the green area are organic results.

Organic Listings

Organic search engine listings are those that appear down the middle of the page. Search engine optimization services are devoted to optimizing sites to appear in the organic listings space. See the diagram above to see where organic listings and paid listings appear in the Google search engine results page.

Spider-driven search engines such as Google®, Yahoo!® and MSN® use "robots" or "crawlers" to score Web sites across the Internet. Robots "spider/crawl" each site and "score" pages based on how relevant they are. A Web site's score or placement within a spider driven search engine is derived from hundreds of variables such as link popularity, density and frequency of keywords in page content, HTML code, site themes and more. You will want to focus many criteria in your SEO strategy to position yourself well among the major search engines. Here are two of the most influential factors:

Link Popularity

Spider-driven search engines use robots to spider Web sites across the Internet by traveling through links from web page to web page. A Web site's score or placement within a spider driven search engine is derived from hundreds of variables such as, link popularity, click popularity, keyword density, Web site themes and more.

Google is the most popular spider-driven search engine. Its database currently has about 4 billion pages indexed and is known for finding the most relevant information. When Google spiders the Web, it finds sites by traveling through links. The more sites that link to you, the more important the engines believe your content to be. You should focus on getting many important sites to link to your site. You can do this in many ways: submit to online directories, exchange links with business partners and industry-related sites, or participate in Link Building.

Page Content
Search engine spiders can only spider through text. They will use the content on your site to determine what your site is about, which in turn will help to decide how highly your site will be ranked for specific keyword phrases when visitors type them into the search engines. For this reason, keyword research is critical to obtaining natural search engine placement and should be at the top of your list when mapping out your SEO strategy.

You will need to know how many people are searching for your keyword phrases and what kind of competition you are facing when attempting to obtain a top spot in the search results. Keyword research, text writing, submissions and site analysis are all included with our search engine optimization packages.

Paid Listings

Yahoo!'s Pay-Per-Plick (PPC) Program shows paid ads at the top and right of the results pages. Web sites that show up here bid on keyword phrases and pay Yahoo!® a small fee each time the ad is clicked on. The more you bid per phrase the higher your ad will appear on the results page. Yahoo! PPC is a great way to help drive traffic quickly to your Web site. You can set a daily budget. When you max out your budget, Yahoo! will pull your ad for the remainder of the day.

A comprehensive search engine marketing campaign may encompass both organic optimization for long-term success and a pay per click campaign for immediate results. Feel free to contact a search engine marketing consultant at 1-877-438-8599. We can help put together a marketing strategy for your site's needs.

Each organic search engine ranking places emphasis on variable factors such as the design and layout, keyword density and the number of relevant sites linking to it. Search engines constantly update and refine their ranking algorithms in order to index the most relevant sites. Other variables that have an impact on search engine placement include the following:

Why Search Engine Optimization?
Studies have proven that top placement in search engines generally provide a more favorable return on investment compared to traditional forms of advertising such as, snail mail, radio commercials and television. Search engine optimization is the primary method to earning guaranteed top 10 search engine placement. Learn more about the search engine optimization process and discuss an SEO strategy for your site when you contact a search engine specialist today.

RSS Feed

What is RSS Feed?

RSS feed is a method of distributing links to content in your website, content that you'd like others to use. It's a mechanism to "syndicate" your website content.

A common comparison that might help you understand how syndication works, is to think about comic strips, those cartoons commonly found in newspapers. The cartoon is made available to any newspaper that cares to run it, in exchange for a fee — often as many as 2,000 papers in 65 countries.

Now imagine that you published a web page about a particular topic and you wanted people who were interested in that topic to know about it. By listing the page as an item in your RSS file, you could have your page appear in front of people using RSS readers, called "news aggregators". RSS also encourages people to include links to your content within their own web pages. Bloggers are a huge core audience that especially does this.

What does RSS stand for?

The answer depends on who you ask. RSS as introduced by Netscape in 1999, then later abandoned in 2001, stood for "Rich Site Summary." Another version of RSS pioneered by UserLand Software stands for "Really Simple Syndication." In yet another version, RSS stands for "RDF Site Summary."

History buffs might be interested that there's been some rivalry over who invented RSS. This is why we have both different names and indeed different "flavors" or versions of RSS. Mark Pilgrim's written an excellent article, What Is RSS, that charts the different versions with recommendations on which to use. I'll also revisit the version choice you'll need to make. But first, let's look more closely at some basics of what goes into any RSS file.

How does RSS work?

Basically, you create a file that contains all your headlines, links and descriptions. You go to relevant news sites and submit your feed for approval. The sites will check your file for changes at a time scheduled by the individual sites. If the file has been updated then your updated headline(s) will be processed into the system.

A Basic RSS File

Each RSS file contains information about your website and your description, all surrounded by matching start and end tags. The information and its tags are called an "item." Your RSS file will have to include at least one item. Generally, items are web pages that you'd like others to link to. CLICK HERE TO SEE HOW TO WRITE THE CODE

Once you've created and validated your RSS text file, register it at the various aggregators, and watch the hits roll in. Any site can now grab and display your feed regularly, driving traffic your way. Whenever you update your RSS file, all the external sites that subscribe to your feed will be automatically updated. What could be easier?

RSS Feed Options

Everything shown above is the bare basics you need to create a file and start syndicating content from your website. However, there are options you could choose.

For example, rather than your entire website being a channel, you could actually have different content from within the website be defined into 'separate' channels. That's something we will explore in a future article, but some of the resources below will guide you through this, after this material becomes more familiar.

RSS 2.0 allows you to insert all types of additional information into your feed. It can be overwhelming to look at these and decide which to use. The easy answer is, don't concern yourself with anything you don't yet understand. Not every aggregator supports all the options offered. As long as you provide the minimum information suggested above, you should be fine.

Choosing The Right RSS Version

Earlier, we mentioned there are different versions of RSS. Even though you were entering the bare minimum of information, your file could easily be considered up to RSS 2.0 standards, the latest version promoted by UserLand and which is widely used.

The Syndic8 website reports that the most popular format of RSS by far is RSS 0.91 - and though we've demonstrated RSS 2.0, your file as shown is entirely compatible with RSS 0.91. In short, you've covered all the bases.

Saving Your RSS File

Now that you're done adding to the file, you need to save it. As long as the file is valid (more below), it doesn't matter what you call it. For this example, let's call it "yourpage.xml".

Once your file is saved, you can upload it to anywhere you want on your web server. Let's say you put it in the root or home directory. The address to your RSS file would be:

http://yourdomain.com/yourpage.xml

Validating The RSS File

Now that your RSS file is done, you need to validate it. Use a service aptly named 'Feed Validator'. Here are three: Feed Validator, UserLand, and Wytheville Community College News Center (we've found UserLand to be the most dependable URL). Simply enter the address to your RSS file, and you'll be told if everything is OK — or if there's something wrong you need to fix.

The service will also generate a JavaScript code that you can post on your site. Anyone copying the JavaScript can automatically have your feed syndicated into their pages — pretty neat!

Get Syndicated!

Now that your file is validated, you'll want the world to know about it! To make this happen, visit the RSS directories and search engines. They generally offer submission pages where you can inform them of your feed.

On Your Website

You also want to make sure people who come to your web site see that you provide a feed. It's very common to post a link to the feed somewhere on the home page of a web site. If you have a dedicated news page, you may want to put it there, as well.

You can link to your feed with an ordinary HTML link. However, many sites use a small orange XML icon to link to the feed. Some sites use blue RSS icon. There is no standard about using these. We've supplied both here, if you would like them.

Finally, it's good to "ping" one of the major services that track when web logs and RSS content changes. By doing this, you ensure that other sites that monitor these know to check back at your site for more content.

Weblogs.com is one of these major services (it's just been purchased by VeriSign). Enter your site's name and the URL of your feed into the manual Ping-Site Form, and it will know you've updated your feed. The Specs page explains how to set up automatic notification.

blo.gs is another major change monitoring site (just purchased by Yahoo!). It is used to receive the same information as Weblogs.com, so unless Yahoo changes that you shouldn't need to notify it separately. However, if you want to be on the safe side, it's easily done. Use the ping form, which also explains how to set up automatic pinging, as well.

Just the Beginning

Publishing your RSS feed is just the beginning. RSS can be used as a mini database containing headlines and descriptions of what's new on your site. It is perfect for layering on additional services. In addition to displaying your news on other sites and headline viewers, RSS data can flow into other products and services like PDA's, cell phones, email ticklers, voice updates and iPods.

Email newsletters can easily be automated with RSS. Affiliate networks and partners of like-minded sites can harvest each other's RSS feeds and automatically display the new stories from the other sites in the network, driving more traffic throughout.

RSS Aggregators

There are a number of RSS news aggregators out there that automatically suck up RSS files from content providers and present the news in a variety of ways. Some of these are: my.netscape.com, my.userland.com, and moreover.com. They make it easy to drop an RSS feed into your site. O'Reilly's new Meerkat Open News Wire service, shows what can be done with RSS and some clever code. Meerkat aggregates the currently available technical RSS feeds, and filters new stories by time, topic, keywords, and even regular expression. Narrowing the new stories down to your interests is a breeze, all entirely automated.

Everybody wins

RSS encourages multiple points of entry to one primary article, rather than multiple copies of the same article. And it appears that the sites with the most back-links win, and those with the freshest content also win. RSS creates a win-win situation. Once you have data in a standardized format, new forms of content distribution channels are only limited by your imagination, and scripting ability.

How to Use Keywords to Optimize Your Site for Search Engines

You have designed a beautiful web site and published it for the world to see and visit. You wait patiently, however there is either a trickle or no visitors at all and therefore no sales.

You may be 1 of 4 web site owners that has not optimized your site with keywords for ranking in the search engines. You say you have inserted keywords in your site, but are they targeted keywords?

What is a Keyword?
These are words or phrases which people would insert in a search engine to look for information contained in your site. The search engine spiders take those words and display the best sites that relate to that information. Depending on the popularity of the word, you may have a million or more web sites to choose from.

Ideally your web site should appear in the top 20-30 sites displayed, to be included in the persons search. This would result in a continuous stream of visitors.

Targeting the Best Keywords
If your keywords are not tightly targeted to your site, you will dim your chances of being highly ranked in the search engines. Here’s what to do:

Go to the overture suggestion tool or wordtacker.com and insert a word or phrase that one would search on for information on your site.

Create a table (in MS Excel or MS Word) with 4 columns.

Insert 200-300 words or phrases in the first column from the results of your suggestion tool.

Use the second column to record the popularity of each word beside each word in the first column.

The third column is to determine the competing sites for the words you have listed above. Do a search on a few of the most popular search engines (is Yahoo.com, Google.com) for the words or phrases you have listed above. (i.e. if you do a search on Google.com for “Internet Marketing”, your reply will be:
“Results 1 - 10 of about 3,280,000”). Enter this number in the third column for each searched word to determine its popularity.

In the fourth column you can enter the results of the other 3 columns. Mark the words in this column that have a high number of searches but have low competition. Utilize these keywords or phrases in your site, so you won’t have to compete with the millions of other web pages.

Now you have a list of targeted keywords or phrases that you can incorporate in your web site. Not all search engines use keywords to rank your site, however you have increased your chances for those that do. Doing keyword research can lead to a continuous flow of visitors to your site, and ultimately more sales.

Where to place keywords in your web pages?

Title Tag
This tag should contain your most important keyword phrase. Make the title interesting enough to grab the visitor's attention. Only use 5 to 6 words in your title with your most relevant keyword in the beginning.

Description Meta Tag

The search engines often use this tag when they display the description of your web site in the search results. Try to make the description inviting for your visitors. The length should be less than 200 characters, including spaces.

Keyword Meta Tag
This tag will contain a listing of your keywords and keyword phrases that are relevant to your page and enable a Search Engine to find you.

Here are some things to remember:

Don't use the same keyword more than 3 times.
Use keywords that occur in your Title Tag and Description Tag.
Use only 200 characters for all your keywords.
Use different keywords for all your pages.
Only use keywords that are relevant to your site.
Use lower case letters.
Use the single and plural forms of your keywords.
Use commas or spaces between your keywords or keyword phrases.

Heading Tags
These tags hold separate topics between paragraphs and range from

, which is very large and bold to

, which is very small and bold. Your page heading should contain your most important keywords or keyword phrase.

Alt Tag
This tag is used to add text in place of the image. The user may have turned off reading the graphics to make the page load faster. Therefore he will read the ALT Tag text instead. Add short keyword rich text to your graphic links. Make sure the ALT text describes the link destination.

Hypertext Links
Include your keywords or keyword phrase in your link text.

Content
Search Engine spiders put more weight on keyword rich content that is higher up on the page rather than in the middle or lower sections. Insert your keywords and keyword phrases in your text at least three times.

Types of Sites that won't get indexed by Search Engines.

Flash and Frame Sites - pages created this way will be avoided by the Search Engines spiders.

Dynamic Pages - any web address that contains a question mark (i.e. ASP, Perl, Cold Fusion), will not be indexed by the spiders.

Password Protected Pages - Search Engines Spiders will not index any area that is protected by a password.

SITEMAP

A site map (or sitemap) is a graphical representation of the architecture of a web site. It can be either a document in any form used as a planning tool for web design, or a web page that lists the pages on a web site, typically organized in hierarchical fashion. This helps visitors and search engine bots find pages on the site.

Site maps can improve search engine optimization of a site by making sure that all the pages can be found. This is especially important if a site uses Macromedia Flash or JavaScript menus that do not include HTML links.

Most search engines will only follow a finite number of links from a page, so if a site is very large, the site map may be required so that search engines and visitors can access all content on the site.

What is a search engine?

A search engine is a program that searches through some dataset. In the context of the Web, the word "search engine" is most often used for search forms that search through databases of HTML documents gathered by a robot

What other kinds of robots are there?

Robots can be used for a number of purposes:

  • Indexing
  • HTML validation
  • Link validation
  • "What's New" monitoring
  • Mirroring

How do I prevent robots scanning my site?

The quick way to prevent robots visiting your site is put these two lines into the /robots.txt file on your server:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

What if I can't make a /robots.txt file?

Sometimes you cannot make a /robots.txt file, because you don't administer the entire server. All is not lost: there is a new standard for using HTML META tags to keep robots out of your documents.

The basic idea is that if you include a tag like:

META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX"

in your HTML document, that document won't be indexed.

If you do:

META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOFOLLOW"

the links in that document will not be parsed by the robot.

Where can I use a robot?

If you mean a search service, check out the various directory pages on the Web, such as Netscape's Exploring the Net or try one of the Meta search services such as Met Search

KEYWORD TOOLS

§ Keywords Analyzer

§ Keyword Elite

§ Word Tracker

§ Rapid Keyword

§ Golden Keywords

The Google Adwords platform allows you to select four matching options:

Broad Match

Broad match is the default setting for an Adwords campaign. Broad match means your ad will appear in search results when any combination of the words in your keyword phrase are used in a search. Many an advertiser has learned expensive lessons using this setting. Let’s look at an example.

Phrase Match

Phrase match is a matching option that gives you a bit more control over your ads. Phrase match tells the Adwords platform to only show your ad when a search is conducted for the particular order of your keyword phrase. Using the phrase match option for “travel journals”, my ad would appear when someone searches for a phrase with “travel journals” in it, but not “journals travel”. To use phrase match, you simply place quotation marks around the keyword phrase.

Exact Match

Exact match is…exact match. It is the most targeted option. You should use it only if you want your ad to appear in searches for the exact keyword phrase as written. For instance, if I want my ad to appear in searches for “travel journals” and nothing else, I will use exact match. To select the exact match option, simply place brackets (“[]”) around the keyword phrase.

Negative Match

No, the negative match option doesn’t involve cussing, insults or adult sites. Instead, it allows you to designate which keyword phrase search results you do not want to appear in. For example, I may not want my travel journal product to appear in search results for “Amazon travel journals”. I would simply list the keyword phrase with a dash (-) in front of it and my ad will not appear. The negative match option is a tremendous way to eliminate junk traffic from your Adwords campaign.

The Google Adwords platform is a tremendous advertising platform. Effectively manipulate your keywords and it can be a highly profitable one as well.

manual submission

Definition

Adding a URL to the search engines individually by hand.

Information

Manual search engine submission may be more time consuming than automated search engine submission, but a fair amount of optimization specialists stick with the "old fashioned way."

Blog

Definition

A frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts and Web links.

Information

A blog is often a mixture of what is happening in a person's life and what is happening on the Web, a kind of hybrid diary/guide site, although there are as many unique types of blogs as there are people.

Blogs are alternatively called web logs or weblogs. However, "blog" seems less likely to cause confusion, as "web log" can also mean a server's log files.

link popularity

Definition

A measure of the quantity and quality of sites that link to your site.

Information

Link popularity is an example of the move by search engines towards off-the-page-criteria to determine quality content. Off-the-page-criteria adds the aspect of impartiality to search engine rankings, as citations from other authors in the Web community helps define a site's reputation. In theory, great sites will naturally attract many links, and content-poor sites will have difficulty attracting any links.

Link popularity assumes that not all inbound links are equal. For example, an inbound link from a major directory carries more weight than an inbound link from an obscure personal home page

Q. What are Meta Tags?

A. Meta tags are HTML codes that are inserted into the header on a web page, after the title tag. In the context of search engine optimization, when people refer to meta tags, they are usually referring to the meta description tag and the meta keywords tag.

The meta description tag and the meta keywords tag are not seen by users. Instead, these tags main purpose is providing meta document data to user agents, such as search engines. In addition to the well-known meta description and meta keywords tags, there are other useful meta tags, including the meta http-equiv tag, meta refresh tag, the meta robots tag, the meta copyright tag, and the meta author tag, etc. These tags are used to give web browsers and search engine spiders directions or data on various information.

Meta tag

Meta tags are important players in the game of search engine optimization

What Is A Title Tag

The title tag is an element in the header part of an HTML page denoted by two tags. For instance, you might have .

Title Tag Guidelines

There are no hard and fast rules for writing titles but there are some guidelines you might want to follow. a title should be 64 characters or less and that titles may be truncated if it’s longer than that. Google show 66 characters in their search results listing, Yahoo allow listings up to 120 long.

Who or What Uses Title Tags

1. Titles are used by website resource librarians, directory editors (such as DMOZ), and other webmasters (such as strategic link partners) when they link to your website.

2. The title is displayed in web search results by the vast majority of search engines to help you target and attract your visitors.

3. Nearly all the major search engines use a title tag in order to rank your page. Search engines deem the title one of the most important pieces of information when determining what the content of your website is.

4. The title is displayed in the visitors browser window usually at the top of the viewable part of the browser screen.

Why Are Title Tags Important - Accessibility

Firstly, by carefully crafting your website title you make it more accessible to resource librarians, editors and webmasters. If you have a nice simple title link which they can add to their pages both relevant and understandable they are far more likely to link to your website. If they link to your website using a hyperlinked title relevant to your target audience, you get targeted traffic from simply writing a good title tag. More relevant traffic means much higher conversion.

Why Are Title Tags Important - Relevancy

Secondly, if Google or Yahoo crawl your website and find that the title tags you’ve written are relevant to the page on which they are written it means there is a much greater chance of a good ranking on the engines.

A good ranking on the engines for your selected keywords means that you’re more likely to be found by your target audience. This again means that you attract the people that you want to your website, the people who are looking to buy your product or service. The title tag becomes your search engine listing. Think of it this way, in a similar way to the classified ad you write for a newspaper, the title tag listing is your online advert, so make it as attractive and relevant as possible to attract the right visitor.

Why Are Title Tags Important - Readability

Thirdly, the browser window is affected by the title and it’s convenient for the visitor to your page. How many times have you had five or six Internet browser windows open? A good title tag means that a quick scan of these titles shows the reader which page is which. The first couple of words in the title it could be argued for this reason alone are the most important text you will ever write for a web page you want to be read.

Q. What is the most used search engine?

A. Google is by far the most used search engine. It provides search results not only on it's home page, but powers other search engines' results as well. Google claims to have indexed over 3 billion pages, but in reality, that number is probably too small. More than 300 million searches a day filter through Google's fingertips.

Q. What are Meta Keywords?

A. The meta keywords tag allows you to provide additional text for crawler-based search engines to index along with the rest of what you've written on your site.

One way to use the meta keywords tag is to emphasize a particular word or phrase in the main body of your text. For example, if you own a website all about plaid pants, and want to reinforce the word "tartan", then what you would want to do is have that word sprinkled liberally throughout your web copy, and also inserted into your Meta keywords.

Another option is to insert unusual words or synonyms into your Meta keywords tags that you don't actually have on the page itself. For instance, if you are a Star Wars fan and have a website about collectible Jawas, a good idea would be to put George Lucas's name in your keyword Meta tags.

This would increase the odds of someone stumbling onto your page that only was looking for George Lucas; however, an even better way to increase those odds would be to include his name throughout your copy as well.

January 2008 Google Page Rank Update

Today we are having our first Google Toolbar PageRank update of 2008. At least there are dozens and dozens of reports that PageRank scores on the 72.14.25.x data center has been updated.

What does this mean to you? To your rankings? Nothing.

In any event, for many Toolbar PageRank is a prestige thing. So congrats if your PageRank score went up. Sorry if it went down.

Why do some SEOs want toolbar PageRank to go away.

Recently, there has been a lot of discussion over the PageRank score found within Google's Toolbar. So I thought I explain why I, and many other SEOs/SEM reporters would love to see the PageRank score disappear from the Google Toolbar.

Back in the good old days, SEOs used to do whatever they could to increase their PageRank. If you had a high PageRank, typically a 7 or higher - you were set. You could literally rank for almost anything, if you also followed that up with good, on-page SEO work. That quickly went away, I believe, with the florida update of November/December 2003. In any event, SEOs used to wait for the toolbar PageRank to update, to see how they did in getting links from high PageRank sites. If they did a good job with that, they would see their PR increase and immediately see their rankings improve. SEOs were able to see an update coming, when the various Google Data Centers didn't match each other. Google rankings would change on some data centers, the link counts would change and the PageRank would change. Hence, the term, the Google Dance. Those days are pretty much over. Google is now changing almost daily. Google's current link count is almost useless at the time being. Google's data centers are frequently updating.

Ever since then, top SEOs and even Google engineers have been pushing to explain that PageRank is not as important as it once was. In fact, some go to extremes to declare Google PageRank Lunacy, in Sweden, we had a Google representative tell us that the link command was not so useful, later we had someone quote Google as saying PageRank is for Entertainment Purposes Only, which was then refuted by GoogleGuy.

All that understood, it is clear that many would like to see the PageRank score go away from the Google toolbar. I am confident, this won't happen soon. I would say that most engineers would probably like to see it go away. But the marketing folks probably would not. I am not talking for Google her, I am just throwing out my feelings on it.

So we see that people are or were obsessed with PageRank, and rightly so. Hence why SEOs and reporters and even some Googlers wanted to tell people to not live and die by it. Some were extreme in their message, but for good reason.
